Withdrawing from prozac? Im 20 and have been taking a 30ml dose of prozac once a day for 3 years to treat depression. My boyfriend was horrified and begged me to stop... and eventually i did. Anyway i stopped fairly suddenly although i had been forgetting a lot anyway. This was around 6 weeks ago and i've been fine until today. I've started shaking and become paranoid he is cheating, im feeling really down. Is this something to do with withdrawal? Ive tried stopping prozac before and had symptoms immediately after, but like i say ive been fine up until now.

LAUREN replied: "yes that would be withdrawal especially the paranoid part"

Unable to withdraw from prozac? Anybody ever been unable to withdraw from prozac because the withdrawals get too great? did your doctor warn you about withdrawals? or did he tell you it was not addictive? p.s. if you withdrew from prozac under doc supervsion did he ask you to come back to see how the withdrawal was going to check your levels?

branddxb replied: "they say to be very slow and wean it off. there are other medications too. post a message in health -thorntree section of lonelyplanet.com. real docs log in there."

dali333 replied: "yes weaning must be very slow. and remember each person is different. one person may be able to wean in a week, where another may need many weeks."

olympics junkie replied: "I was tapered off Prozac under doctor supervision to try a different med. I had no trouble at all, but keep in mind that it takes a while to do it properly."

Switching from paxil to prozac? I've been taking paxil for 8 years and last week my doctor switched me to prozac. I've been withdrawing from paxil for 1 week now and I have terrible head zaps and dizziness. My doctor suggest that I take paxil and prozac at the same time and then slowly get off the paxil a little at the time. I'm afraid to take both at the same time. I am therefore lowering my dosage of paxil before starting prozac. Did anyone take both paxil and prozac at the same time and then got rid of the paxil? I've also read about the possibility of getting a bad reaction such as rash, swelling of throat and difficulty breathing, its really worrying me. Can this reaction be very serious? I gained 30 pounds from the paxil, does prozac make you gain weight too? Thank you. I've also read about the possibility of getting a bad reaction FROM PROZAC such as rash, swelling of throat and difficulty breathing, its really worrying me. Can this reaction be very serious?

Marguerite replied: "It's always best to wean yourself gradually off a med so withdrawal is kept to a minimum. If your doc says take both and slowly wean off the paxil, then I'd follow his advice. As you lower the paxil, he may then begin raising the prozac to cover the slack. The reactions you speak of are very, very rare. So don't worry. But, if per chance you have any reaction, call your doc. I wouldn't worry however, especially since you've been on paxil which is in the same category prozac is in and you didn't have a reaction."

red replied: "i would personally kill the doc that ever put you on the crap, either of them. but yes, you can take both at same time. i wouldnt screw around coming off paxil after eight years if you can help it."

Me replied: "I'm obviously not a doctor, but I wonder if you could just work on VERY slowly weaning off Paxil and staying off of it for a few weeks before you start Prozac. I think they even have liquid forms of some drugs so that you can wean to doses lower than pill form. How are you supposed to differentiate between Paxil withdrawal and Prozac side effects if you're taking them both? Then again, your doctor's reason for having you on both at once is probably to lessen or stop the head zaps and dizziness. If you're on all of this just for depression, you might want to ask to be weaned off of Paxil, wait about 6 weeks, then reevaluate the situation. Then again, if it's bad enough depression that it's worth it, being off of everything for 6 weeks could send you spiraling down. It's dangerous to take advice from people online. We might mean well, but we're not your doctor. It took me a long time of asking similar questions on here to realize that."

i have been on prozac for 7 years,i only take 20 mg a day but i think it makes me more depressed? has anyone heard anything bad things about prozac ,and could i have withdraws if i stop taking it?

medusaswrath replied: "you'll definately have withdraw symptoms, so you'll need to consult a doctor and he'll wheen you off of it. look at the side affects listed on your pre ion information and you'll find depression and suicide listed (along with a bunch of other stuff). you need to consult your doctor about this."

sweetgirl replied: "you should really talk to a doctor about this, asking stranger on the internet about your medical problem might not be the right thing to do. good luck in finding the RIGHT answer"

One replied: "Consult with your prescribing doctor on this feeling that you are having. Like all anti-depressants, it should be lowered slowly for your body to adjust to not using it."

tina l replied: "I was on it for years too, Off now, all it did was stop me from crying, which was Good, but, everyone, including myself noticed I was easily irritated being on it, I wasnt Happy, It didnt make me Feel happy, & Yes, after awhile It made me feel more depressed, so I got off it. I havent found anything to work for me yet, Im tired ,no energy, tried so many meds...Not on anything right now, What else have you tried??? Really Good luck."

rhmgram8 replied: "Prozac is a Seretonin Reuptake inhibotor used for anxiety and panic. You need to go to your Dr. and ask for an anti depressant. You really need to consult with a Psychiatrist for you medication as family doctors are really not up to date about psychiatric medication. He might also switch to a different SSI(paxil, zoloft). Do not try going off your medication by yourself, you will definitely have withdrawl symptoms!"

TMAC replied: "Honey if you think it makes you more depressed then by all means stop taking it. I had a wife once who took it for eight yrs. she had to attempt suicide before the nut psyc. doctor took her off it. I know that this stuff is only a crutch and when you decide to walk then you should walk."

rosewood_1967 replied: "Well, when I was on prozac it made me feel murderous, like I would really like to kill people. Very bad medication in my opinion, for myself. You can have withdrawals from anything but w/d from prozac is not as bad as you think. Doctors just want you to stay on the meds a lot of the time, but I have found that Omega 3 fatty acid supplements and vitamins & minerals, and amino acids help a lot. GNC is my friend, not the pharmacy industry. Better living thru chemistry my butt. You might want to get some Milk Thistle, and Dandelion capsules to help clean your liver, help get the deposits of the medication out of your system, and drink a Lot of water, the full 8 cups a day, plus some... Proper water intake is very crucial for brain health. Even slight dehydration messes with your brain chemistry and makes you irritable, tired, depressed. NOT POP, water.... Good luck and hope you do ok. Like the above posts, check with your doctor first, but like I said, they usually want to keep you on meds, not take you off. Fair warning."

candy1974 replied: "YOUR BODY BUILDS UP A TOLERANCE TO MEDICATION AFTER AWHILE, SEVEN YEARS IS A LONG TIME TO BE ON 1 MED. I HAVE TO CHANGE MEDS. ABOUT EVERY 2 YEARS BECAUSE THEY STOP WORKING FOR ME YOU SHOULD TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR I'M SURE HE'D AGREE ITS TIME TO CHANGE MEDS."

How Dangerous is Prozac? I was subscribed Prozac by my doctor but I am very worried,I did a research and it turned out Prozac might lead to many side effects.I took my first pill today and I feel dizzy and not well at all.I am not sure I should continue with it.How dangerous is Prozac? Can I return to normal even after that first pill I took?Do I have to do anything to withdraw from this first pill? Thanks! They sometimes say it causes brain damage, in one way or another. It changes neural pathways, neural function, causes memory loss, induces unability to rest, and loss of ability to move easily. Is that true?Does it really causes people to be less active than before too?

preciousmoments1962 replied: "My daughter was taking that too and in her first week she got really sick so i made her stop taking them and she's been fine every sense...I called the doc and he told me to tell her to keep taking them...alot they know!!"

piepiepie replied: "Prozac helps many people each year with their depression but, yes it does have it's side effects. Trying it is okay as long as you have a good doctor who listens to you and your concerns. I tried prozac and a few other antidepressants. You'll feel normal after you quit them. I quit mine 'cold turkey' so to speak. I had some headaches but, that's about it. The reason I quit was that the meds made me feel like depression was a lot more pleasant than being depressed and on prozac. My doctor kept upping my dosage even when I complained!! After that experience, I changed my life for the better. I decided not to be depressed. As simple as that sounds that's what you've got to do."

pathfinder replied: "Tou put it bluntly, all drugs are toxic to the body, in one way, or another. Why do you think that there are side effects for ALL drugs? Even those with minimal side effects, if you take drugs for an extended period of time, it will start to deteriorate your body systems, maybe even faster than the disease it was designed to cure. Doctors will NEVER admit this to you, but think about what I said."

angie_vinny replied: "you`r doc should have told about any side affects before subscribing them to you phone your doc"

niceguy replied: "not if you don't abuse it"

badgerwithagun replied: "Prozac is not a dangerous drug in any way. Yes, it has side effects, as have every other drug you've ever taken in your life so far and will take in the future. The most comon side effects are nausea and increased anxiety, but both of these will resolve within the first couple of weeks of taking Prozac or any other similar antidepressant. You were prescribed this medication for a reason - most likely depression - it's up to you whether you think your depression is severe enough to put up with the side effects of any medication you may be prescribed. However, all antidepressants have side effects, most of them are very similar to the side effects of Prozac, so you're going to have to make a decision as to whether you think you can manage without medication or not. Yes, of course you will "return to normal" after taking one tablet - you still are normal now, you're just experiencing some minor side effects. And no, you don't have to do anything to withdraw from the first tablet. Personally, my advice would be to keep taking the medication as you were prescribed. The side effects should wear off within the first week or two, and hopefully within 6 weeks you should notice a benefit from taking it. Although Prozac has side effects, it is NOT a dangerous drug!!!"

Ajeesh Kumar replied: "I have taken Prozac for 7 years and I could stop it successfully. It has not done any permanent damage to my body. Most of the people (including me) develop sexual dysfunction from a longterm use but it is reversible. You will become okay in 3 weeks stopping the prozac. It has saved many life, and it is one of the safest drugs people use regularly. You are taking this drug to avoid or manage a bigger problem. Believe in your doctor"

Tara C replied: "I am a nurse in a mental health facitity and this is what I can tell you. As far as antidepressants go, it is the safest. Feeling sick ussually goes away in a week to ten days. if it is bad, call the doctor and start on a low dose ussually 10 mg then increase it to 20mg. If you choose to stop there will be no "withdrawl". However if you are suffering from depression I would give it a shot. Through studies they have discovered that prozac is the only drug safe enough for people under 18 yrs old. I hope this helps and good luck. My only other thing is if you cant get rid of the side effects there are other antidepressants that might work better with you body chemisty like wellbutrin or cymbalta."

What antidepressant do you think is the worst to withdraw from? zoloft is pretty easy to withdraw off of i thought(takes 3 or 4 days to do so) prozac is a hard one to withdraw off of plus they say your supposed to take over a month to withdraw off of it paxil- i think that's one of the worst drugs ever to come off i think ive heard its even worse then coming off of opiates! Wellbutrin is ok to come off of it took me only a few days to come off of that one. Honestly i think opiates & paxil are the worst drugs to come off of ever!!!!!!!

Dickey replied: "I took my self off of paxil, (Young & Dumb basically) & I was high strung, stressed, snapped at every little thing, sick to my stomach, & the anger was horrible, NEVER Again will I take myself off of it EVER!"

trose07 replied: "i am on celexa which is a generic for paxil i think? but anyways I know at one point i was on paxil and on zoloft and they are ALL TERRIBLE to get off of. I am terrified to try to get off celexa because of the withdrawals I suffer/"

I want to stop taking Prozac? I've taken 2 pills each day for 2 days now but I'm kind of thinking I should stop and try other methods like changing my lifestyle. If I stop taking them now will I suffer any bad withdraws?

Lila replied: "The best thing to call your doctor he is the only one who can give you this medical information."

Cassie T replied: "Nope. You won't have formed any chemical dependency to it in 2 days. And that's a very wise choice. Drugs are a last resort - when lifestyle changes and therapy alone have failed. It's a big deal to put such strong chemicals into your brain, and it's not something that people should take lightly. EDIT: Wow. Walking7 (answerer below me) is one of the least helpful "mental health professionals" I've read. Calling you names for making a personal decision about your own health? Is he serious? Drugs are not the only treatment for depression. In fact, therapy by itself is just as effective. But a lot of doctors will try to push you straight onto medication because they are being given money by drug companies to do so. And people like Walking7 who have spent too long working in mental hospitals often look at mentally ill people like animals, and not human beings."

themadhatter replied: "Especially with antidepressants and SSRI's it can be really dangerous to suddenly stop taking your medication, you wont have withdrawls but some wierd shit can happen thats what happened with me, im not on it anymore but yeah you should talk to your doctor if you want to get off them"

libtih replied: "Seeing a psychologist is the best option for you, they will do cognitive therapy which is a solution to the problem unlike taking medication. 2 days od medication isn't going to do anything it takes about 2-3 weeks to work, you will not have withdrawals, you will if you continue taking them for a long period of time and the depression will return after discontinuation. Best of Luck!"

walking728 replied: "Sounds like you are informing us of your decision not to follow your doctor's treatment recommendations after 2 days. Why did you bother going to see him/her in the first place and spend the money in the first place. If you don't like the way you feel, then try to change the way you feel. If you can't change the way you feel, see a professional If what you have done does not work and the professional says take thse pills, it will take 6 weeks for them to really be effective. So what is your rationale for quitting after two days ? Did you have a chance meeting with Tom Cruise ? Keep taking the pills and see you doctor when you are supposed to; You know there are a lot of people out there who prefer to be sad and depressed, write bad poetry, as opposed to happiness, joy, stable relationships. Maybe you are one of those people"

Cold Turkey off Prozac? Does anyone know what it is like going off of Prozac cold turkey? I recently have tapered off of Effexor. I am completely off Effexor but am still having withdraw symptoms. Sweating, dizziness.... other then that I'm okay. I was put onto a lower dose of Prozac because I'm tapering off of it as well. I am now on 30 mg of Prozac... and forgot to take it the last two days.... so I was wondering how bad the withdraw symptoms could end up being? I also want to know if there would be any lasting effects or problems with going off of an anti-depressant this quickly. Thank you in advance. PS: I was put on Prozac as I was tapering off of Effexor to combat the withdraw symptoms... it didn't do much... but I'm guessing might have helped a little... as I said I'm still having withdraw....

So confused on things!! replied: "I took Prozac, which it didn't work on me, mainly cause they only gave me 20mg. I didn't get any sort of symptom and I took two bottles worth of pills for about 2 months, I'm guessing. I doubt the symptoms will be bad at all, I actually didn't get any symptoms from it, so probably whatever symptoms you're already experiencing, might be the only ones you will experience. You never know. Sorry I'm not much help, just telling you what happened with me thought it could help just a little."

bob j replied: "Effexor is notorious for being particularly nasty to try and get off of, so I am not surprised you are still having withdrawals even if you are taking Prozac. I'm not sure how bad Prozac is to try and get off of, but I would not go cold turkey with it either. However, unlike Effexor, Prozac stays in your body much longer before it breaks down, so you may be able to miss a few doses and still have enough inside of you to not feel the withdawals right away. Unlike Effexor, I mean. I'm sure I don't have to tell you what it was like if you missed a dose of that stuff. Personally, even if it did not seem to be helping much, I would try and get back on the withdrawal schedule that your Dr. recommended. No need to make things worse than they need to be, you know ?"

Ahorn replied: "Check this page. The Road Back is a Patent Pending program, developed in 1999 to assist individuals to taper off medication and eliminate existing side effects a person may be experiencing from the medication. The Road Back Program has now helped tens of thousands of individuals taper off their medication. The Road Back book, How to Get Off Psychiatric Drugs Safely, details the entire process and is available for free on this Web Site."
