With IVF, when did you quit drinking caffeine and alcohol? I'm starting birth control pills and lupron at the beginning of October. My IVF series is the beginning of November. Did you stop drinking caffeine and alcohol when you started taking the injections, when you were going in for the retrieval, when you started BCP..? I still have another couple of months before my series, but I'm just curious. Thanks :) Also did you have a successful pregnancy with IVF? I would love to know details if you're interested in sharing!

Tina replied: "I was never more than an occassional social drinker but pretty much did not have any alcohol from when I started the pill to suppress my cycle. Caffeine on the other hand is my vice . . . I cut back to one small caffeinated drink like a can of coke or a small coffee per day when I started the injections. Prior to that, I had slowly cut down from 3 beverages to 1. We were blessed with our twins on our first IVF cycle - they just turned one at the end of August. Best wishes and good luck!"

Giving up caffeine (help!)? Ok I am giving up caffeine during all the treatments leading up to IVF, and am turning into a Miss Cranky Pants! Somewhere in the instructions for all my meds it said to not drink caffeine during IVF but I am getting conflicting reports about whether I can have a little, none at all, etc. , at any rate I need to give it up...anyone else give up caffeine either durring IVF or pregnancy? How did you do it, how did you handle it esp. when going out to restaurants or social settings, that wonderful first cup of joe in the morning, etc. (can you tell I have a little addiction?)Thanx! K9 (a.k.a. cranky!) I am asking this in the pregnancy section too, so as to maybe get a few more answers.

Team SWITZERLAND! replied: "eating veggies amd getting plenty of exercise sould releave your crankyness"

tarantula replied: "I was also addicted to caffeine, but as soon I got pregnant I could not drink it! it was hard at the beginning as I felt I wasn't "awake" but a few months in I was fine. My second pregnancy I drank about 3 cups of coffee a day because I was always tired. I had a miscarriage, and I don't know if that was the cause, but next time I'm definitely not drinking coffee. I'm sure you can have a cup or half a day. Ask your doctor. Also try drinking caffeine free hot tea. Hang in there!"

Kathy replied: "Studies have shown that 2 8-oz cups per day can decrease your chances of getting pregnant, although I don't know whether any studies have been done w/ IVF patients. It has also been linked to increased chances of miscarriage. Another big concern is that the caffeine could affect an embryo's development, especially in the first trimester when the nervous system/brain are forming (but later, too, as the lungs, etc. develop). Depending on where you are in your IVF cycle, you may have time to wean off gradually. I did this last summer before my IVF cycle. When I tried to quit cold-turkey, I was not able to function at all--ultra cranky, extremely muddled thinking, extreme lethargy, etc. I had to measure how much I drank and gradually decrease the amount I allowed myself. You will have to find out through trial and error how much and how quickly you can decrease your consumption. I could only handle decreasing by about 3 oz at a time, then keeping that level for about a week before decreasing again. Some people find it easier to drink 75% reg/25% decaf and gradually increase the amount of decaf. Keep in mind that decaf does have a little bit of caffeine, too, but not nearly as much as regular. If you go to a restaurant you could order hot choc (or decaf) instead. The warmth and consistency will be similar and it does have a small amount of caffeine, which shouldn't be harmful. If I'm feeling tired & have to go to a social function, I will allow myself 8 oz of weakly brewed coffee. I've actually had doctors tell me that one cup a day shouldn't be an issue (as long as I keep in mind any other sources of caffeine, like chocolate, tea, etc.), so I figure that I'm still well under that."

Marianne M replied: "Try a mixture of decaf & regular coffee. I know quite a few people who have done that. Each week they gradually increase the amount of decaf in the blend & decrease the amount of regular coffee. Good luck & baby dust!"

Lucii replied: "have you tried having some decaf coffee or tea...it might help!"
